Back from my summer social hiatus, postcards from the island – and a new discovery. Here lies one of the world’s greatest land arts – the Cretto di Burri. Concrete slabs are laid across what was once the town of Gibellina, destroyed by the 1968 earthquake that killed 300 and left 100,000 people homeless. The “cracks” represent the actual city streets; new, old roads to pass, shift, and advance through grief. Many of us have taken such a walk in recent years, myself included. This felt like a pilgrimage. I was moved by the transformational power of this art, the astounding visual impact, and the quiet of this place—totally unique from anything I have ever seen or experienced. Endless gratitude to have spent these weeks with my loved ones, nestled between mountain and sea, in the intimacy of this island we call home. #sicily #crettodiburri #estateitaliano #gibellina #albertoburri
