Adnan Syed is FREE after 23 yrs in prison. This is Adnan here with his wonderful mother, Shamim & family friend Rabia Chaudry. Adnan would likely have remained in jail for life, were it not for this superhero in the red hijab & her relentless pursuit of justice. I have seen the media up close, at its very worst- friends like Monica Lewinsky and Princess Diana, facing its unfettered savagery, and I have personally been phone hacked, upskirted, defamed and libelled. It can sometimes be easy to forget the power of the media to do good. And this is a moment to celebrate the media at its powerful best. The SERIAL podcast made Adnan Syed’s case world famous. Henrietta Conrad and I asked Rabia and Adnan’s family if they would entrust us to produce a documentary about his case. Director Amy Berg, who had a history not just of making brilliant true crime documentaries, but more importantly, of getting the innocent released from prison in the process, agreed to direct the series for HBO/ SKY. Amy and her PI team, Rabia, Colin Miller and Susan Simpson, unearthed new evidence in our documentary, The Case Against Adnan Syed, which was referenced in the hearing which resulted in Adnan’s release yesterday. Now Amy Berg will be directing a new and final Episode 5 for HBO / Sky which will cover Adnan’s release.
