The Instagram app only adds viewable phone location data to your posts when you choose to add it. Instagram only accesses this location data in two ways: through the precise location permission directly, or reading embedded location data when importing a photo from another app with that permission. Either way, if you do not explicitly share this information it will not be shared publicly. However, the image itself can also give away your location through minor background details. The "Precise Location" permission allows apps to determine your location, and should only be turned on for apps that require it, such as mapping applications. By reviewing and turning off this permission on your device you can keep your location safe and out of the hands of third parties such as data brokers. Review this permission in iOS by visiting Settings-> Location Services; or on Android under Settings -> Privacy -> Permission manager -> Location. For more details about protecting your privacy, you can visit EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense hub at ssd.eff.org. #locationtracking #dataprivacy #settings #precise #location #mythbusting #privacy #locationservices #ios #android
