“It made a big difference to my life. I was not worried about what might happen. I felt safe in the hotel and that I would be OK.” Meet Sammy. Sammy used to be a teacher in Dominica, until she had a stroke aged 30. She couldn’t go back to teaching, so she came to the UK to be with family. She was living with her grandfather when their home was destroyed by a fire. He went into a home for people with dementia, and she went to a hostel. Sammy then found out about Crisis and got a place in a Crisis at Christmas hotel. She had her own room, where she was able to relax with a good book. “My room was good. The food was excellent. The people working there, the volunteers – they were great.” While staying at the hotel, Sammy saw a podiatrist and got support with her immigration paperwork.
