• @npr During a Senate hearing on abortion access, Berkeley law professor Khiara Bridges and Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley sparred over how to speak about gender.
Bridges accused Hawley of a “transphobic” line of questioning after Hawley asked Bridges about the phrase “people with the capacity for pregnancy.”
Bridges said, “Many women, cis women have the capacity for pregnancy. Many cis women do not have the capacity for pregnancy. There are also trans men who are capable of pregnancy as well as non-binary people who are capable of pregnancy.”
When Hawley asked if Bridges saw abortion as a women’s rights issue, Bridges said, “I want to recognize that your line of questioning is transphobic and it opens up trans people to violence.”
When Bridges asked Hawley if he believed “men could get pregnant,” Hawley said that he did not. Bridges said Hawley was “denying that trans people exist.”
