THIS is sacred land for the Siekopai. A territory indivisible from Siekopai spirituality, culture and livelihood. One week ago today, the Siekopai people of Ecuador - who number just over 700 - stepped up their fight to recover this heartland of their ancestral territory, known as Pë’këya or Lagartococha. Wilmer Piaguaje, a young Siekopai community member, explains the significance of this land: “Pë’këya is the soul of the Siekopai...There is everything that is important for a Siekopai person...that territory has power and value for what’s in it. Many stories I grew up with are from there and they are not only story, they explain who I am as a person and what my family is...I was denied the right to live there, and I see my children grow without understanding what it’s like to be a Siekopai, without a Siekopai soul because the soul is there”. Recovering this territory is essential for the Siekopai people's survival. The Siekopai were driven out of Pë’këya over 80 years ago after the Peruvian-Ecuadorian war and to this day, Pë’këya is still not in the hands of its ancestral owners. Ecuador must respect #IndigenousRights and give the Siekopai back their ancestral land!
