For years now, with people I trust, I have always said as a joke, “Can you imagine what a Jason Marks-directed musical might look like? It would be amazing!”
Little did I know that my self-deprecating humor would eventually manifest this moment.
Opening June 18th with Jewish Family Theatre at the Weinstein JCC, “The Prince of Egypt” will mark my Richmond directorial debut. I am also pulling double duty as music director as well (Yes...read that again - directing AND music directing...).
Who thought this was a wise idea?!
To be clear, I have directed and music directed my own original works for Virginia Rep on Tour, but I’ve never had an opportunity to direct something external, and nothing at the size and magnitude of this particular production.
I am so happy to have the fabulous and talented Dee Lynch as my assistant music director to help with the choral heavy lifting (and who will also be in the show, too!). She is a true blessing!!
This is a massive undertaking, and I wouldn’t be able to do it without an incredible team on and off stage. The principals have been quietly rehearsing for the last few weeks with me, and your ears and hearts are in for a treat when you hear these amazing voices. We had our first full company rehearsal last night, and needless to say, it is a delightful group of humans who are anxious to tell this very powerful story. This is a Richmond premiere, and a regional premiere – you won’t see it anywhere else.
A special shout out to Debra Clinton for trusting me in this process and giving me the chance to lead. Thank you.
Tickets are now on sale, and I hope you will join us this summer for what I am hoping will be a very moving piece of theater. Lots more to come in the coming weeks ahead - stay tuned!
