Bethany had back pain for years, performing a bent over row this day created 6/10 pain. One test I performed that I learned from Dr. Stuart McGill starts by raising a kettlebell – this recreated her pain. However after I cued her to properly breathe and brace, she had significantly less pain showing she would respond well to enhancing core stability. . The cue I taught her demonstrated by Brandon of @Kabuki Strength starts by clasping your hands into your side – start by breathing in a way that expands your stomach laterally and pushes your hands away (called a diaphragmatic breath). After this breath you THEN stiffen your core like someone is going to punch you. . A tool I use in clinic to teach this is a lightweight belt called the breath belt – placing small balls into the belt gives the same cue as your hands from the past drill. . We then retested the same weight as before with this new cue for proper core stiffness and she no longer had pain showing she now had a path for her rehabilitation to fix her injury! #backpain #lowbackpain #gym #legs
