As these two get older and more independent, I am willing to outsource more of our time to trusted caregivers, but it’s been a difficult decision to step back and watch my engagement and numbers drop over the last year or so...
I’ve never been one to believe that you can “have it all”. In fact, I believe mothers get the brunt end of the deal when culture pressures us to that end.
Even dropping my part time gig as a content creator, I am still a full-time breastfeeder (till 2 years), full-time caregiver to two babies and part time mama to three more school age kids. Yes, that’s right- FIVE kiddos. 😉 I’m a household manager, house cleaner and cook. I’m an Uber driver, dog owner, skibidi-toilet expert 🙄 and oh yeah, wife, woman, HUMAN.
Either I cut something out, or I drop the ball on everything. The hours that go into meal planning, grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, chore delegation, school trips, homework, and homeschool definitely add up beyond a 40 hour week. But does it add up to a quality life? This is what I had to ask myself in recent years. Am I “doing it all” just to do it all poorly?
I consider the most important work to be the raising of my children; It’s the nurturing, the quiet moments, the side by side mundane tasks that allow us to grow in patience and kindness together. It’s a privilege that not all moms get or long for, but I’ve slowly realized is my life’s greatest work. It’s an honor that feels like weight at times, but as weight lifter I know that’s only making me stronger. 💪
So let’s do this “one thing” and do it well, I tell myself. Cheers mamas!
