Serena Williams' retirement highlights a double standard in sports.
Williams, who turns 41 next month, announced that she will retire after the U.S. Open, which begins in late August, citing her family as her main reason for stepping away.
The tennis legend and mom has been a fierce advocate for gender equality both on and off the court — and when she announced her retirement, she also made an important point about the unique sacrifices women must make in their careers.
“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family,” she wrote. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”
