Diamanté Destiny Barbie, my OOAK donation to this year’s National Barbie Doll Collector’s Convention live auction for charity! This year’s convention theme is ‘A Decade of Destiny’ inspired by the 1920s. So I did a high-glam modern interpretation of a 1920s flapper dress done in silver sequins with hanging crystal chain fringe in various sizes and colors, for a textural mix. Her silver sequin tulle legging-boots combo is inspired by stockings exposed by the new short hemlines of the 1920s. A crystal chain rests in her hair part, and crystal chandelier hoops frame her face which features a metallic smokey eye, pencil thin eyebrows and a pearlescent lavender heart on her lips, a modern take on 1920s makeup and the emphasis on the Cupid’s bow. Her multi-tonal lilac hair and ice blue feather boa pick up some of the tones of the iridescent crystal chains hanging from her dress. She’s got the MotM Nichelle sculpt on the Curvy Collector body because yass curves deserve couture 💅🏽 I am always so happy, honored and impressed to create dolls with the Mattel ‘atelier’. When we find the perfect fabric to use or find the perfect blend of hair colors to use, when we find a solution to our design problems, it makes me feel so damn alive!!! @shirleyfujisaki did her thing as per usual, blending pink and lavender hair fiber for the perfect lilac, then styling the hair into the perfect cute flip! @magichatebabes is a new Mattel face paint talent and had been working at Mattel for literally only days when I need someone to paint this face last-minute and he absolutely rose to the occasion and served icy 1920s but modern gorgina glam. I wish the patternmakers and seamstresses were on the gram to tag them, but their work speaks for itself, sings for itself, hits a damn whistle note for itself. As a designer, you might draw a cute sketch, but it’s the different support teams that bring it to life.
