ACTION ALERT! Public comments are due this Thursday August 4th for the proposed climbing management plan for the Black Canyon. Please read the @accessfund action alert for details (link in bio). This past Spring I replaced the old, unsafe bolts on The Hallucinogen Wall and freed the route in a day. The climbing rangers gave me authorization to replace the bolts and I got to work replacing some 40 bolts. Mostly I spent time hanging on ropes in this ancient canyon, suspended up to 2000 feet above the river, watching birds and the light and shadows change as the wind blew around me. This act of service was made possible through the long standing tradition of climbers and rangers working together to preserve the canyon alongside providing sustainable climbing access. The new proposed NPS management plan would dramatically change this relationship and could set a troubling fixed anchor precedent for other parks such as Yosemite. I first freed the Hallucinogen Wall in 2012 with @bradgobright , completing the 3rd & 4th free ascent of the route over 2 days. Those memories, mixed with the labor of the bolt replacement, led to a very fulfilling experience freeing the route in a day.
