Here are a few of the incredible black artists I’ve had the privilege to photograph. SUPPORT THESE ARTISTS @_yenaah_ @autumnjonesmusic @iamdeboray @jeremyxgreen @iamtaylorsteele @kikisaraia @orr.what_ @chadthemaverick @_sincerelysadiya Each has a diverse, powerful voice and I invite you to listen to what they each have to say, support, invest, and promote their artwork. • To say a bit about my personal reflections in this time, I am learning how thoroughly my lens is my eyes and that as such, my default is funneling stories and people through my white perspective. It is pivotal that I confront my biases, educate myself on the systematic changes that need to be made, and act to change them. To do any less is being complicit in the oppression of black people and black communities. To do any less is to hide behind white privilege and turn a blind eye. To me it is reminiscent of the blind eye so many turned on the Jews less than 100 years ago as they, along with my maternal grandparents, were brutalized, many killed, and the lucky ones permanently displaced. As a grandchild of Holocaust survivors, I understand generational trauma. I can not, however, understand what it is like to be black in America. I will never understand. However, it is my duty as a person with generational trauma to see when injustice continues to happen to disenfranchised communities and act for change. It is my responsibility to see that saying Never Again in regards to the Holocaust but not acting to dismantle systemic racism in America is deeply hypocritical. Similarly, I do not believe I, or any photographer, is unbiased. As such I highly recommend supporting and following black photographers. Two that I highly recommend following are @oj_slaughter & @markelzey both with powerful, moving work. As a small step, I invite you to check out these incredible artists. Hire them. Listen to them. Let us change our habits, acknowledge our failings, and act each day for a better future.
