I am lucky enough to be half Canadian and to have spent most summers there since I was born. I spend an inordinate amount of my time there driving around and asking people to wait for me while I go thrifting which is what led me, at 23, to set up my first business “Thrift”. I remember my initial interview with The Prince’s Trust, I wore extremely skin tight Tsubi jeans I’d borrowed from a friend, sandy coloured slouchy suede Marant-esque knee boots, a sheer white T-shirt which said something completely inappropriate on it and a big cloud-like vintage fur coat. The men in suits seemed to find me quite amusing and agreed to lend me 3K to pursue this preloved dream. I went to Canada and handpicked everything from wholesalers and charity shops in Toronto and Ottawa, shipped it back and sold it from a stall in Spitalfields market. It was extremely hard work and no Saturday nights out, I set up and dismantled the stall on my own every sunday at dawn. The business didn’t actually make any money and I had to sell my car to pay back Prince Charles but I loved the entire experience and it fired up my love of second hand clothes. I guess the moral of the story is that you should always try, and that interview clothes are underrated.
