in 1949 a 14 year old boy under the pseudonym “Roland Doe” was allegedly a victim of demonic possession. Originally from Maryland, Roland was an only child who was quite close with his aunt Harriet, a spiritualist. She introduced him to a Ouija board and he would play for fun. 11 days after this Harriet unexpectedly passed away. Riddled with grief Roland tried to communicate with her through the board.
After her death, the family experienced strange noises around the house, furniture moving on its own and vases flying or levitating when Roland was around. Roland also started displaying strange behavior. They were instructed to reach out to a Catholic priest. After multiple failed exorcisms and his mom seeing the word ‘LOUIS’ scratched on his rib cage, the family relocated to St. Louis.
These haunting events would go on to inspire William Peter Blatty to write the novel and evidently the movie “The Exorcist.”
