This painting titled ‘Latch’ came out of remembering those early months of feeding, when your body becomes someone else’s anchor and there’s no space between where you end and they begin. It isn’t a literal depiction, more the atmosphere of what that time felt like, the heat, the pressure, the ache, the closeness, the way it rewires you on a nervous-system level.
Painting it on silk was important, silk has always been tied to safety for me, and it also carries that contradiction of being both fragile and unbelievably strong. The colours bleed into one another the way those early days do, you’re needed constantly, you lose track of yourself, and yet something irreversible and holy is forming in that blur. At its core, Latch is about the first binding, how nourishment is not just physical, but a total claiming of the mother, and how that mark stays even after the baby unlatches.
