📢 📢 PREVENTATIVE MARITIME MAINTENANCE WORK AT BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK IS COMPLETE! 📢 📢
About one-third of Brooklyn Bridge Park sits atop four piers, which are held up in the East River with about 13,000 timber wood piles. The completion of this project ensures the structural integrity of the piers for generations.
When the piers were built in the 1950’s for industrial use, the pollution in the City’s waterways kept marine life out of the water. As the City’s rivers have become cleaner and less polluted, marine life has returned, including marine borers which cause damage to timber wood piles beneath the piers.
In 2008, when construction on the Park began, a number of piles had already deteriorated and required structural repair. However for the large percentage of piles that had not yet deteriorated, the Park chose a more innovative approach of preventative maintenance, where work is done before the piles begin to deteriorate, to protect them from future damage. The preventative maintenance approach is beneficial from an engineering, environmental, and financial standpoint, minimizing impact on the maritime ecology as well as current and future park operations.
The work to encase 11,000 piles, about 80% of the total, in protective epoxy began in 2019. The other 2,000 piles were too far along in deterioration to preventively maintain, and were repaired structurally. Work on the timber piles occurred both above and under water, which required specialized divers and an understanding of maritime conditions.
