Mels Drive-In (@melsdrivein) is a California classic, soaked in neon and wrapped in black and white photos of hot rods and beehive hairdos. The iconic diner chain doesn’t just look the part, though; it actually helped to put rollerskating carhop restaurants on the map more than a generation ago, and even served as a retro backdrop to the famous George Lucas film ‘American Graffiti.’ Locally Mels is known for saving several Los Angeles-area Googie coffee shop buildings in Sherman Oaks and Santa Monica, while also serving as a hub for tourists and Hollywood celebrities alike. Today, on the family-run restaurant’s 75th anniversary, diners can find big discounts on staple breakfast plates and other goodies, available all day long at all locations.
