September 18 marks one year since the Taliban’s ban on girls’ secondary education, which has forced 1.2 million girls out of school and denied them the right to learn — and decide their futures.
This week on Assembly, guest-edited by 18-year-old Afghan student @aydin_sahba (who’s heading to #UNGA with @Malala and other young women this year!), young Afghan women — some still living in Afghanistan and some who left — share about their experiences in the last year.

Our cover illustration is by Ghezal Asghari (@ga.arts), an artist from Kabul. Ghezal had plans to open her own art gallery, but since the Taliban takeover she “had to leave my homeland with thousands of hopes and dreams.” Now resettled in the U.S., Ghezal continues to make art. 💛
