I did a relatively long essay in Japanese called "Strategies for Style" ("センスがいい人”の戦略) as an insert within the February 2022 issue of @popeye_magazine_official with excellent illustrations by @dick.carroll
To be honest, I was a bit flummoxed by how to approach this piece. I did write a book about clothing history, but I don't like advising on personal style, nor do I believe we still live in a world where there is a single authoritative way to dress well. In writing my new book about status and culture, however, I was able to unlock some of the universal mechanics underlying "good" taste, and so I decided to list out the core *strategies* for good style rather than focus on specific looks, fits, or items.
I picked seven of the our world's most interesting dressers, living and deceased, and analyzed their styles as representation of these principles (Tradition, Authenticity, Uniformity, Suitability, Simplicity, Experiment, and Emotion.) No one can follow all these strategies at once; they're contradictory by nature (e.g. too much Experiment negates pure Tradition). But as individuals, we can pick and choose the strategies that work best for who we are.
