Allied air forces support emergency services in fighting wildfires
#NATO Allies assist each other with their specially adapted aircraft, whether it is concerted firefighting action or one nation helping put out fires in another.
The use of a range of helicopters and planes of different size and type allows crews to operate in remote locations without the need to return to a permanent operating base for water refilling
Climate change has created natural disasters in countries worldwide from floods to catastrophic wildfires. This year, again, many Allied countries have been devastated by wildfires in the last few weeks
As the affected nations are mustering all their civilian emergency services to fight fires around the globe, the military makes available their unique equipment both on the ground and in the air to support the national firefighting efforts
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency has deployed 40 aircraft as they support the Hellenic Fire Brigade for the 11th consecutive year. Upon the request of the Greek authorities, the agency has deployed a record number of aircraft to 20 different locations within Greek territory
The mutual support of European countries in their efforts to fight wildfires also takes place within the framework of the RescEU, an EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
