These are the many faces of my abuelo throughout his career in Habana, Cuba, from Batista to Fidel. Fidel Castro and his Commie Comrades preached equality because the “evil white and wealthy”were the only ones that prospered but that’s simply not true. The truth is my abuelo, much like many in Cuba was a hard working middle class man. As a kid he came from a struggling family of 10. He didn’t inherit a fortune and he wasn’t from a prominent family. Heck! Abuelo didn’t even finish school because he simply didn’t like it so, my great grandfather gave him the choice: school or skills. Abuelo chose skills and was taught by my great grandfather at an early age very important handyman skills, to work hard, and to provide for the family. He proudly worked at “Regalias el Cuño” until Fidel Castro took over and nationalized this business along with all of the others. My abuelo was given a choice to become a Communist militant and keep his job or lose his job all together. Abuelo was a man of conviction and refused the job and uniform. He later took a job as a bus driver to provide for our family until he was able to leave in El Mariel (1980). Castro didn’t create the equality that (only) exists in books. Castro created equal misery and subjugation regardless of color or creed. Since 1959, the plague of Marxist-Leninist totalitarianism and Communism have devastated Cuba. Cuba has been battered with exodus, moral degradation, and a constant “fight or flight” amongst its people in order to survive. Cuba, “The Pearl of the Antilles” has been left in shambles and so was the heart of my abuelo. Ps: Abuelo NEVER hung a picture of Fidel or Che. Abuelo NEVER supported Fidel Castro and his lies! This is why, as his granddaughter, I’m vocal about Cuba and what’s going on in this world.
