The very establishment of Los Angeles has been driven by cycles of multi-generational racism, displacement, violence, segregation, and greed. Fundamental aspects of community members' lives - such as who has access to safely move about our region - are shaped by this legacy. Our organizations work for equity and transportation justice - meaning we prioritize the needs of communities of color and the working class - in order to account for this history. We, the undersigned organizations, have been working to make our streets safer in a way that prioritizes equity and builds a better Los Angeles for all. Given the magnitude of the hateful and anti-black comments of Councilmembers Martinez, de León, and Cedillo, these individuals' can no longer champion equity-based policies. We call on Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, to resign immediately. We stand with Councilmembers Mike Bonin, Nithya Raman, and Marqueece Harris-Dawson. We call on other council members and others in positions of leadership in this city to finally take up the urgent work of equity and justice. This moment shows us that equity cannot be just a public expression but a value lived both in policy and private. Equity and racial justice are not complementary to the work of the City, they are integral. This moment shows the need for policies to center equity as we cannot rely on the individuals in power to implement it.
