It kills your hair and you loose all the depth and dimension. There are 2 techniques that I like to use when taking someone darker, all over color or lowlights. I make my decision depending on how comfortable the client is with being darker, how light their current hair is and how porous their ends are. 1. Going Darker all Over: To take someone darker all over I like to use 3 different colors. Base color(the same level as natural hair or a level darker), mids color (1-1.5 levels lighter then the base color), ends color (1.5-2 levels lighter then the base color). This will guarantee that the color will look natural and that the ends won't grab too dark. Also the client won't freak out about being too dark all over. Since you always have to use some or all warmth to go darker your hair is going to fade warmer. Plan on being back at the salon for a toner if you don't like too much warmth. 2. Going Darker with Lowlights: I use this technique for anyone who is really light all over or in hair stylist terms is a level 8-10. A little dark for them is going to be really noticeable. In these cases I like to do a full head of lowlights, highlight around the framing and smudge the base in between with a color that matches their natural base color to create depth. The color you choose for your lowlights depends on the porosity of the hair and how light the ends are. This color will grow out beautiful and it will look super natural and it's a great way to transition someone into a darker color.
