Last month I shared EP 1, the intro to our Message in a Bottle series from my journey with @petco_sa to learning more about the PET plastic recycling world in SA so in honour of it being #sarecycleweek this week here’s a dump (😭 I tried but I couldn’t resist 😂 ) of some highlights and the inspiring people I met. Lisa Steenkamp owns & runs one of the biggest buyback centres in SA and gave me insight into what operating at this level as a woman in the industry is like. Smanga is ingenious in how he’s helping to combat pollution, unemployment and the need for funeral cover all through the collection of PET plastic and other recyclables in his community in White City, Soweto. Then I headed home to Limpopo, experienced the beauty of Tzaneen for the first time & Rakgolo Willie Ramoshaba took me through how women in Phalaborwa are being upskilled & unemployment is addressed through the creation of bags and other accessories being made from PET bottles (think Stoney & Sprite bottles.)
