Get a glimpse into the life of the Indigenous guard, as seen through the lens of A’i Cofan filmmaker Nixon Andy Narvaez @nixon_andy_ !
This short film takes us on a journey deep into Indigenous Amazonian territory, as documented by Nixon Andy Narvaez, a talented young filmmaker, land defender, and member of his community’s guard.
Nixon is a member of the A’i Cofan people of Sinangoe, who are the ancestral guardians of over 157 000 acres of pristine rainforest in one of the most biodiverse regions on earth. Earlier this year, his community’s struggle to protect their ancestral land against gold mining in the Ecuadorian Amazon was recognized by the prestigious @goldmanprize.
“As a filmmaker, I’m excited about the possibilities of community-based communications. This is about us, as Indigenous peoples of the Amazon, telling our own stories, sharing our struggles, and showing the world where we come from and what we’re protecting. We have a different vision to share with the world. Through photographs and film, I want to continue to raise awareness about my people’s fight in defense of our territory and life. I call upon everyone to join us and support us in this dream!”, says Nixon.
