I am a Junior Doctor . After 6 gruelling years of medical schools, 2 foundation years of 100h weeks & years of specialist paediatric training, I am a Junior Doctor. There are 1000s like me; Drs who aren’t GPs or Consultants but have decades of experience. Drs who have PhDs, Masters, multiple postgraduate exams/qualifications, yet we are still called Junior Drs. Drs with YEARS of NHS services, still working 60h+ weeks, countless evenings, weekends & nights. Drs who are burned out. Drs who are called Junior . Why? So they can fool you into believing we are fresh out of med school greedy buggers who are lazy & money hungry. We aren’t lazy. We are exhausted. Exhausted from working under awful conditions for little pay& from the trauma we witness every day. Exhausted from the constant mistreatment, abuse & government failings . Junior Drs are the VAST majority of Drs you meet in hospitals, clinics & in A&E. In fact any doctor who isn’t a Consultant or a GP is a Junior Dr. Once you finish med school you do 2 Foundation years where you a Foundation Yr1 or Yr 2 Dr. After this you enter specialist training & are called a trainee/SHO/Registrar. I’m in a Paediatric training programme which means I do 8y on TOP to become a consultant paediatrician. But that’s not the whole picture. We are asked to do more, to take on research, to do PHDs, to take year out of training to develop leadership, QI & education skills etc etc so instead of 8years as a Junior Doctor you’re now looking at 10y+. Then theres kids, mat leave and childcare. Oh and professional fees, insurance and indemnity . 65% of Doctors are considering leaving the NHS, & I am one of them. 1000s have already left for NZ, Aus & USA for better work life balance & pay. 65%. More Drs train LTFT because they cannot cope with the trauma of working FT in the NHS. . Earlier this year I was paid £16ph. £16ph. It’s a joke. Asking to be paid fairly for our experise isnt greedy. We work gruelling hours, under immense pressure in the face of non existent resources . This Xmas I led resus and saw near 100pts but I am still only a Junior Doctor The system is broken We are broken We are human We are vulnerable We deserve better . K
