🎉❤️ Update: Busan, 1999 won the GGA Best Short Award, qualifying it for the 2023 Oscars!
Catch this little film at SF on April 30th or for the LA premiere on May 11th 7:30pm in little Tokyo! Blessed to have been able to work with the many talented folks tagged above.
BUSAN, 1999 began as conversations with my family about potentially moving back to Korea, our homeland. My parents felt the need to care for their parents, especially during their final years. They were willing to drop everything, the so-called American dream, to pursue a simpler, economically-harder life back in Korea. Instead of moving to Korea, we decided to at least visit... and during our 1.5 month stay (in the height of Covid), I decided to use the money I made from my last film and dump it into this meta narrative short film. I felt my parents guilt for abandoning their parents the same way I felt guilty for leaving mine to have fun in college across the country. I think the balancing act between work/life, loved ones vs self-gain won't ever come easy for me, but I'm making an effort to give both 60/60... cause sometimes that's all you can do.
Thanks to close friends and family for being a part of this process from the idea stage to now! And thanks to the @shorttofeaturelab for giving me the time and space to make a terrible first cut. ;))
