Reposted from @lordrarerock WHATEVER IT IS... THAT GIRL, PUT A SPELL ON ME - Jimi Hendrix performing “Purple Haze” at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970. Hendrix was one of the most inventive electric guitarists in rock and roll history. He did more to extend the reach of the instrument than anyone else of his generation. He single-handedly demolished traditional definitions of music by playing and recording sounds made with his guitar that defied transposition or even explanation. Hendrix was a very innovative man and that showed with his creation of his own studio, Electric Lady Studios. He built this studio to his exact specs, with the most modern equipment available at the time. His recordings frequently feature unique uses of the stereo channels, for instance, with instruments and sounds apparently moving from left to right and back again. He spent a vast amount of time in the studio trying to perfect his musical vision. Hendrix claimed this song was inspired by a dream where he was walking under the sea and was engulfed by a purple haze, which got him lost. He said it was a traumatic experience, but in his dreams his faith in Jesus saved him. During the early stages of the song, the chorus was written as “Purple haze... Jesus saves.” However, he decided against these lyrics. Hendrix mainlined that this song had nothing to do with drugs, but it’s hard to believe they weren’t an influence. The lyrics and vibe seem to portray an acid trip, and drugs were plentiful in the Hendrix camp around this time. Enjoy iiii]; )'
