#NOPE Just so dope. Yeah I know I was sleeping. (Had a wee bit of work to do) Done watched it 3 times in a row. Not finished. I think this might be the first time I’ve seen a film where every single being on screen was treated with whole regard. No one had to be disposed or diminished to advance the plot. And the screenplay structure was still classical and perfect. A hero’s journey in which every character is the hero. 🧡 From Gordy to Jupe. From the praying mantis to a black girl named Emerald. From Jean Jacket to OJ. From Ghost to Lucky. Keke Palmer uses her voice with the precision of a prize fighter each tone and inflection a caress or a jab. So much fun watching her make the impossible look natural. Comedic timing on fleek. 🎶 Daniel Kaluuya. Maaannn. One look and a lift of a shoulder and all is said known and felt. Dang! So good. I have a big brother so for me the sibling relationship was pure gold. Really grateful for the full hearted rendering sans saccharine. ❤️ Also this family’s determination to succeed in the business of Show. Get it, Fam!💵 But I’m posting this because more than anything i can stop thinking about Kaluuya’s character’s refusal. Nope, as in no I do not agree to engage you - and then, no I do not agree to be your prey. And, no, we cannot prevail unless we we give Jean Jacket the respect/regard it’s due. Each act of the film is titled with the name of the being that is sacrificed. 🫀 My favorite shot was Lucky’s POV from the trailer. 🏇🏿 These are just notes. No coincidence that I am reading Zakiyyah Jackson’s tour de force theorizing in Becoming Human. Looking forward to the conversation with @jenyujenyu and her folks coming up in a couple of weeks. #blackjockeys #muybridge -who reshot that horse sequence later with a white rider🙄 #screenwriting #newgenres #refusetheagreement #respect
