Sometimes it feels like we are fighting an impossible fight. This week, we had a victory, giving hope and demonstrating that our collective work is indeed having an impact. The US Senate passed the largest climate act in the country’s history. The analysis of several energy modelling groups finds that this act would reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by close to one-billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the year 2030. Combined with further executive action, state and local government efforts, and leadership in the private sector, the US's Paris Agreement commitment could be met. Of course, the bill is not perfect. It greenlights new oil and gas leasing in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska, fails to engage with Indigenous land sovereignty, or fully invest in public transit. But it is a meaningful start.
