#WorkOfTheWeek: Sketchbook pages written and created by British artist Donald Rodney (1961–1998).
Rodney was a leading figure in Britain's BLK Art Group of the 1980s (an association of young Black artists who, inspired by the Black arts movement, raised questions about what Black art was and could be). His personal sketchbooks played an integral role in the creation of his art. They contain a mixture of early studies for new artworks, records of past exhibitions and intimate writings.
In his lifetime Rodney became recognised as 'one of the most innovative and versatile artists of his generation'. His work appropriated images from the mass media, art and popular culture to explore issues of racial identity and racism. 📽️ Click the link in our bio to watch a moving film about the artist's life and work. Rodney's partner Diane Samuels, and his close friend and fellow artist Keith Piper, offer an intimate insight into Rodney's personal concerns and the politics of race and representation in Britain between 1982 and 1998.
