Today, on what would have been her 72nd birthday, we remember Rosie Jiménez (August 5, 1950 – October 3, 1977), the first known person to have died in the US due to an unsafe abortion after the Hyde Amendment was passed, which, in 1977, blocked federal funding for abortion care.
Unable to afford a safe and legal abortion at a clinic, Jiménez sought out a cheaper and unsafe abortion. She died at age 27 from an infection in McAllen, Texas. At the time, she was a single mother of a five-year-old daughter. She was just six months shy of earning a teaching credential.
Texas is and has been, the future of abortion in the US. We hope you will use this day to commit your support to abortion seekers in Texas, and across the South and Midwest.
