πΎ The Boerboel β Facts, Responsibility & Respect for the Breed πΎ This has been bothering me for a long time. People love big, powerful things. Big engines. V8s. Turbo. Extras. But hereβs the difference π we are talking about a DOG. The Boerboel. πΏπ¦ The Boerboel is a South African landrace dog, developed over centuries in a rugged environment for protection, stability, and family guardianship β not for ego, intimidation, or poor handling. π Historically and legally, only registered, appraised, DNA-tested, and microchipped dogs were recognised as Boerboels. Boerboel literally means: π¨βπΎ Boer = Farmer π Boel = the farmerβs dog β A Reality Check Do I breed? No. Am I an expert? No. But I have: βοΈ Owned dogs for decades 33 years βοΈ Owned Boerboels since 2006 βοΈ Over 11 years involved with SABBS-registered Boerboels That is experience β not ego. π§ Demystifying the Boerboel β Myths vs Facts 1οΈβ£ Do Boerboels need bite training? π« NO. A Boerboel is a large, powerful dog (60β90kg). A dog of this size does not need to be trained to bite. π Presence, confidence, and stability are what protect β not aggression. 2οΈβ£ Do they need socialisation? β
Yes β and it must be done properly. From puppyhood, they should be exposed to: π¨βπ©βπ§ Different people & children π©Ί Vets πΆ Other animals π Sounds, textures & environments At around 4 months, once fully vaccinated: ποΈ Busy public spaces π Cement, grass, gravel πΆ Controlled noise environments π This creates a confident, stable dog β not a fearful one. 3οΈβ£ Development stages matter πΎ β οΈ Boerboels go through stages, just like children. βοΈ Between 0β18 months, experiences shape confidence βοΈ Around 2 years, you will truly see their temperament If a puppy gets frightened: π Reassure them π³ Show them the object (like a fallen pan lid) π€² Touch it calmly so they see you are not afraid π Fear is not ignored β it is guided. This is how confident Boerboels are made. 4οΈβ£ Teach children dog manners πΈ β No hugging dogs around the face β No riding or climbing β No pulling ears or tails β οΈ Any dog can react under the wrong circumstances. π With large dogs, size magnifies mistakes. 5οΈβ£ Vet visits should be positive π©Ί βοΈ Take puppies for regular weigh-ins βοΈ Create calm, neutral vet experiences π The vet should not only mean fear or pain. 6οΈβ£ Take them with you β responsibly π βοΈ Let them experience life with you β οΈ Be mindful of: π‘οΈ Heat (no asphalt or sand walking) π½οΈ No feeding before car trips (carsickness) 7οΈβ£ Swimming πββοΈ π Boerboels are excellent swimmers βοΈ Introduce water slowly βοΈ Always stay with them π« Never leave them unattended β οΈ Watch sharp nails π Feeding & Growth βοΈ Puppies: 3 meals a day βοΈ Adults: 2 meals a day π Ask your breeder or vet what to feed and how much. π Growth must be controlled, not rushed. π° The Cost of Ownership β οΈ Boerboels cost more: π More medication π΄ More anaesthetic π More food π If you cannot afford to buy one properly, you cannot afford to own one. β€οΈ Family & Temperament πΎ Make them part of your family β because you are already their whole world. Some Boerboels tolerate other dogs. Some like them. β οΈ Most do not like strange dogs or unfamiliar people. That is normal for the breed. π¨ A Final Word on Responsibility If you post videos of your βstrongβ Boerboel dragging you uncontrollably down the road... β That is not a powerful dog β That is irresponsible ownership A Boerboel should be: βοΈ Calm βοΈ Confident βοΈ Controlled If you cannot manage that β choose another breed. πΏπ¦ IMPORTANT: Boerboel Registration β οΈ SABBS is the ONLY official Boerboel registry in South Africa. Breakaway groups may rename organisations and dogs, but: π Only a registered SABBS Boerboel is a Boerboel. All other dogs may resemble Boerboels β β but resemblance does not equal authenticity. πΎ Respect the breed. Respect the standard. Respect the responsibility. πΎ by .Lititia Hunt Kruger
