“Will Getting Botox Now Prevent Future Wrinkles?” A great question posed by many of you. For patients in their 20’s and 30’s, the answer is very logical. And now, it’s also been proven by clinical studies. Botox limits muscle movement by blocking the chemical acetyl-choline, the chief neurotransmitter, used at the neuromuscular junction. This weakens the muscles used for facial expressions. By weakening these muscles, we can prevent the lines that cause negative expressions, between the brows (the 11’s) and the forehead that gives us an aged and tired look. If these lines are already there, Botox can prevent the deepening of these lines and softens the harshness caused by our daily stresses. Once these lines become TOO deep, they are difficult to correct. If you choose to stop Botox, you will have a new baseline of aging and not worsening of the area that you have been treating. Thank you New York Times for the interview and Amelia Nierenberg for allowing me to participate in clarifying this position for my many patients who have been asking my opinion.
