@broooooooooooooook haunted paintings retain a sense of humor. Rendered almost entirely in different shades of green, her work explores pop culture and personal history, utilizing characters, like the Greek god Pan, her deceased dog Aesop and the protagonist from Taiwanese filmmaker Hsiao-Hsien Hou’s 2001 film Millenium Mambo, to examine the complex nature of humanity. Born in Washington and raised in Oklahoma, Hsu received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Yale in 2016. The following year, she opened her first solo exhibition, Panic Angel, at Deli Gallery in Manhattan. The show, which combined sculpture, painting and essay, was a treatise on mythology—both personal and cultural—that delved into grief, pain, pleasure and longing. When asked: What is a formative experience you remember from your childhood, for Issue 17, she told us: “Watching dust move through rays of sunlight.” Photography by @jesperdlund Interview by @annazanes @thealexandraweiss
