We try not to give more attention to Ye’s antics, but now he’s gone so far as to bully prominent Vogue editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson for slamming the “WHITE LIVES MATTER” message of Ye’s surprise YEEZY Season 9 show in Paris last night.
Ye and far right wing political commentator (and guest of honor) Candace Owens, sported matching t-shirts emblazoned with “WHITE LIVES MATTER” on the back. At least one Black model was also styled in the shirt on the runway. It was swiftly called out internet-wide for being yet another instance of Ye upholding white supremacist ideologies.
With white supremacy and fascist ideology on the rise around the world, many Black netizens are urging fans of Ye to reconsider their support for the artist, citing no intellectual or artistic reasoning that should warrant such a dangerous message.
@gabriellak_j, the stylist and Vogue contributing editor who was in attendance at the show, was one of the first to call out the message. And now, Ye has launched a personal attack against her in a series of Instagram posts undermining her position in the industry, going so far as to take cheap shots at her fashion choices. Part of the the art and fashion world’s “New Black Vanguard,” Karefa-Johnson’s ascension to fashion’s upper ranks has been nothing short of inspirational for a new generation of BIPOC looking to make their mark in a notoriously exclusionary industry.
“Nah, you’re bullying a black woman, in fashion, where we are so few - and for what? Such a low blow,” photographer @campbelladdy commented on one of Ye’s posts. Vanity Fair fashion director @chapoteau also backed Karefa-Johnson, telling Ye “You are obviously intimidated by her intelligence and brilliance.” His last post reads: “WHEN I SAID WAR I MEANT WAR.”
One Twitter user had a suggestion: “Vogue/Condé has an opportunity her... advocate for your employee.” @vogue, @voguemagazine and @voguerunway have kept mum so far, and while it’s impossible to know what’s happening behind the scenes, their silence is starting to look incredibly foolish.
