Employing her signature โ€œnocturnalโ€ palette, both paintings present trompe lโ€™oeil arrangements of ephemera drawn from art history, personal memory, and cultural heritageโ€”forming a layered archive of references spanning centuries. Her work is influenced by Chinese bird-and-flower painting, Audubon illustrations, and Whistlerโ€™s Nocturnes, among others. Informed by her diasporic experience as the daughter of Chinese immigrants to the United States, Jia approaches painting as a vessel for gathering and reshaping time, allowing familial, cultural, and imagined histories to meet within a single, contemplative frame.
