Judd Foundation is pleased to announce that Donald Judd’s Architecture Office, which was extensively damaged by a fire in June 2021 during the restoration of the building, will be re-constructed. The Architecture Office is planned to open to the public in spring 2024. The project will implement the original restoration plans, which primarily focus on the stabilization of the historic structure and the protection of the works it houses. The first phase restored the building envelope, using traditional masonry techniques to repair and repoint the brick façade while maintaining the building’s original aesthetic. The second phase, which was near completion at the time of the fire, addressed the interior spaces and focused on preserving the existing historic details and materials. In the fourteen months since the fire, Judd Foundation has worked with project architects SCHAUM/SHIEH and structural engineers Silman to assess the state of the building and determine immediate needs for the remediation of damage. During this process, the brick structure, which remained largely intact due to the first restoration, has been temporarily braced with steel buttresses to reinforce the historic façade.
