“@the50film is a feature documentary that follows the story of 50 men who took part in a breakthrough rehabilitation program that changed the course of corrections in the state of California. The parallel process, at the center of the program, motivates the structure of the film and the reenactments that focus on the emotional content of past events. We believed that shooting 16mm would not only sink audiences deeper into specific time and space but it would also afford us the opportunity to uncover an emotional richness that we could not extract through digital. In order to better convey the traumatic changes that each of these men went through during their childhood we decided to push the film stocks 1-2 stops as the scenes from their lives became more dire and emotional. We felt that the additional grain and saturation that was gained would create a change in texture that would allow the audience to feel and go through the changes more viscerally.” Director @brentongieser on THE 50 which premiered at @docnyfest this month. The film uses 16mm for all reenactment scenes, which each have their own color palettes dictated by the film stocks chosen.
