In June, California passed a plastics law with serious and direct implications for the fashion and beauty sectors š©āāļø
The bill mandates that producers who sell, distribute or import into California must reduce single-use plastic packaging by a minimum of 25% by 2032. It also states that 10% of this cannot be replaced with another material, meaning all packaging must be reduced.
What might businesses do to prepare?
Our materials expert Philippa Grogan @philippa_grogan suggested key action points, including:
š Consider design and how raw material and processing chemical selection are impacting microfibre release.
š Consider production and how products can be pre-treated to mitigate microplastic fragmentation and release during active use and end of use phases.
š Consider how communication and labelling can be used to inform consumers of the impacts of microplastics and how laundering habits during the consumer use phase can reduce impact - e.g. importance of mashing machine filtration and not laundering after every wear.
š Consider collaboration for innovation - we face these problems together and need to work together to develop and scale the solutions and regulations so urgently needed.
