A few weeks ago I visited the lovely @woodstocksanctuary that shared with me a perspective they take on Veganism and understanding layers of animal liberation through an educational journey than an interrogative one. It’s been almost four years since I went Vegan back in 2018 and I often ask myself how to make the movement more passionate and kind than what is often presented in the dominant media movement. I know everyone agrees that the horrific conditions in which animals are kept and slaughtered in the industrial lens is completely unethical but it also showcases how our global food system is mechanistic and doesn’t value both human and animal species. I’ve always been afraid of animals, maybe it’s because I don’t know how to communicate in their language and I give them a lot of space to make sure they know that I’m respecting their space. Growing up as a child, I had a deep fear of being attacked by an animal, only because I had an experience of being bit by a random dog in the streets. It didn’t make me angry at animals, but rather wanting to make sure that I’m cautious around them because we have different ways of how we express ourselves. The more I’ve explored about the difficulties of what it takes to run sanctuaries the more I understand clearly that the global food system is a product of exploitation. These lovely friends allowed me to talk to them for a bit and also give them a bit of a belly rub.
