Reposted from @thelegendsofmusictv Alice In Chains performing “Love, Hate, Love” at the Moore Theatre in Seattle in 1990In my opinion, “Facelift” is one of the best records to have championed the original interpretation of the grunge sound, which comprised of the band playing Black Sabbath influenced riffs over musical elements that were inspired by punk rock artists like The Stooges. The bleeding, suffocating sound that the band explored on this album featured a much more slow and aggressive melody that was hedonistic and this sound was what elevated their status from underground rockers to mainstream artists. When MTV jumped all over the video for "Man in the Box” and gave them mainstream attention, it wasn’t because they had a mainstream sound, it was because they were different when compared to their contemporaries. I believe that the one element, which differentiates a great band from the pack is that they’re capable of challenging the sounds of what’s acceptable by an artist. With this album, the band created a sound that was so more raw and powerful that it created an audience for grunge and alternative rock among hard rock and heavy metal listeners. If you ask me, that’s a feat that should be celebrated. However, this record also made Alice in Chains one of the first bands to have come from Seattle to break out of a the underground audience. iii]; )'
