Via @projecthiu WHY WE NEED TO WORRY ABOUT HAMMERHEADS? Scientists have sequenced to chromosome level, for the very first time, the entire genome of the Critically Endangered great hammerhead shark. What the researchers found in this study is worrying, this shark has notably low genetic variation, which means that it is less resilient to adapting to our rapidly changing oceans. Equally concerning was the finding that the species also shows signs of inbreeding, an issue that can lower the ability of it’s populations to survive. Effects of inbreeding in sharks isn’t fully know, but other species have shown traits that decrease the ability to survive. This all means one thing; the future of the great hammerhead is bleak. (the hammerheads in this video are scalloped hammerheads, filming a great hammerhead caught by these fishermen is rare, as they travel solo as apposed to scalloped hammerheads who often school) 📹 @sharkgirlmadison groundbreaking research by @saveourseasfoundation
