What is Petro-masculinity? ⛽️ 😱 Professor Cara Dagget coined petro-masculinity to describe the hypermasculine mode of support for fossil fuels in the rising authoritarian movements in the U.S. and elsewhere. Fossil fuels mean more than energy and represent symbols of masculinity, autonomy, and self-sufficiency even when they do not serve the collective well-being of the general public. The oil and gas industry is worth almost $86 trillion and makes up 3.8% of the global economy. Fossil fuel sectors have taken new strategies and tactics to ensure that project development continues to unfold. Fossil fuel elites greatly influence Global North governments by supporting new authoritarian movements worldwide that push out climate denialism to the public. Fossil fuels are primary drivers of the climate crisis and continue to plunder communities worldwide by affecting the land, air, water, and soil. Too many discussions on energy transition focus on replacing fossil fuels as a bandaid solution and investing in solar, wind, and nuclear without realizing it is reinvesting money into technocratic solutions that will not allow for the death of fossil fuel powers. Many of these “renewable” sources need a secondary power source and political discourses around energy transition still center on fossil fuels. The planet has already warmed by 1.2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial averages, yielding terrifying fires, floods, and droughts. Tiny particles from fossil fuels pollute the air and kill as many as 4.5 million people worldwide each year. Exxon Mobil Corp., Shell, BP, and other fossil fuel entities are enormous energy titans that continue to benefit from the extraction of the land.
