Verbal reasoning is one of the most frequent strategies I hear parents use to prevent or manage tantrums. ✨
Being able to reason with our kids is a great tool in our toolbox...but not an appropriate tool for all situations! (As you might have experienced firsthand!)
One clarification point: sometimes parents are confused when I say to AVOID reasoning when your child is refusing to comply with directions. This is because, kids will ask "why?" (and often repetitively!) to postpone having to listen or as an attempt to engage your attention with some verbal back and forth. Rarely does understanding the why helps them follow directions in the moment if they are already refusing. I’ll talk more about timing our reasoning in a future post! 💕
Comment below- do you use verbal reasoning with your children? And does it seem to help?
