I am very happy to continue sharing a project that my dear friend @robert__fox and I have conceived of, “Halls of Amber”. It is a gallery show of sorts, utilizing social media to share the spark of creativity from artists I admire and love and want to share with you. A handful of artists working in various media will respond to the music featured on the new HALA album “In Amber”. Here we present the work of Elijah Burgher (@poor_little_ghost_boy) responding to the album in it’s entirety Eden's Mirror Reverse, 2022 “The abstract forms in this drawing & ‘Black Mirror (I turn Salamander)’ are derived from the lyric, "I turn salamander" in the song, "Christian Prayers." That is my favourite song on the record. What a dream to hear Anohni belt anti-Christian sentiments over a track that is as hard-hitting as vintage Killing Joke. That lyric stands out because it doesn't obviously belong amongst the others, which take aim at the hypocrisies of Christianity as it is practiced today. I imagined the lyric is in reference to the occult symbolism of salamanders, which represent the alchemical principles of sulphur and fire. Salamanders are, in a word, catalysts. Burn it all down and liberate power and truth from the ones who are hoarding and abusing power and truth. Serendipitously, I'd also recently come across a very strange depiction of the garden of Eden by the 15th century Flemish painter, Hugo van der Goes that depicts Satan as a salamander with the head of a young woman. She is standing upright and looking at the fruit that Eve is plucking off the tree, exhibiting an intelligence and curiosity that are weirdly absent from Adam and Eve's blank, doll-like faces. Satan is very much the hero here, the bringer of light (knowledge), so I made her the heroine of the second mirror, "Eden's Mirror Reverse." #HallsofAmber #HerculesInAmber #HerculesandLoveAffair #Elijahburgher #RobertFox
