My mother in law taught me how to make diri ak djon djon (black rice) Once I married into a Haitian culture I took it upon myself to get familiarized with the language, music, (greg & T-vice taught me how to speak creole 😂), and most importantly the FOOD!! My mother in law didn’t give me a recipe per se, she just told me where to buy djon djon mushroom and the method on how to extract the stock from the mushroom. You can use green peas or lima beans; I prefer lima beans. I’m a natural cook so I mastered it the first time I made it. I like to support local Haitian businesses whenever I can so I buy the mushroom from Chez Mireille in Cambria Heights as well as the rice. The package says Madame Gougousse rice but I think it’s Basmati.
