The last picture makes me so sad.
My little guy had been waiting all year to be a vampire. He woke up on Halloween, and I knew something was off because he was running a low-grade fever. It turned out he tested positive for strep.
When we were about to take our annual family Halloween photos, he fell asleep on the couch with a bucket beside him because he said he might throw up.
He ended up sleeping through Halloween for five hours. My wife stayed home to watch him while I took our daughter out with her friend, and they had an amazing time, but I just felt so bad for my little guy.
He woke up around 9 p.m. and was sad that he had missed Halloween. Thankfully, our wonderful friends and neighbors said he could go around for a little mini trick-or-treat, so that’s what he did. When he came back in, he said, “Well, that was a good trick-or-treat. I got lots of candy.” Then he lowered his head and said softly, “I guess next year I can be a vampire.”
Like, what are the chances? My kids are sick maybe seven days out of the year, and it just had to land on Halloween.
Parenting really teaches you to make the most of things. Even though he missed the big festivities, he still got a little bit of fun. He’s feeling better today, and even though that’s the only picture we got of him in his costume, we’ll remember this Halloween as a reminder to always make lemonade out of lemons.
Now on to Christmas. Keep showing up.
