In the last few days leading up to Christmas we thought it would be fun to share some festive-themed sea critters with you šš
First up is the Christmas Island Red Crab š¦
š¦ This red crab is endemic to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean
š¦ An estimated 43.7million adult red crabs once lived in this relatively small area
š¦ They make a spectacular annual mass migration to the ocean to lay their eggs
š¦ The red crab is known as a keystone species, feeding on the forest floor leaves and fallen fruits
š¦ In the 21st Century, the number of red crabs has decreased due to the accidental introduction of the yellow crazy ant, killing crabs and having a massive impact on the biodiversity of the island
š¦ They are pretty big, measuring up to 116mm
