In the last few days leading up to Christmas we thought it would be fun to share some festive-themed sea critters with you 🎄🌊 First up is the Christmas Island Red Crab 🦀 🦀 This red crab is endemic to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean 🦀 An estimated 43.7million adult red crabs once lived in this relatively small area 🦀 They make a spectacular annual mass migration to the ocean to lay their eggs 🦀 The red crab is known as a keystone species, feeding on the forest floor leaves and fallen fruits 🦀 In the 21st Century, the number of red crabs has decreased due to the accidental introduction of the yellow crazy ant, killing crabs and having a massive impact on the biodiversity of the island 🦀 They are pretty big, measuring up to 116mm 📷: @Andrewwatsonphotography #MarineFacts #Crustaceans #FunFacts #CrabsOfInstagram #ChristmasIslandCrab #ChristmasIslandRedCrab #SpeciesFacts
